Archaeologists in Italy have unearthed the remains of a significant early Christian church, dating back to the fourth or fifth century A.D. The discovery was made in the city of Oderzo, approximately 40 miles northeast of Venice, in the area of a former fish market.
Historical Significance
The church, which measures about 75 feet wide and at least 98 feet long, features intricate polychrome mosaic floors and human burials alongside its foundation walls. According to officials, the foundations of the church are up to 1.2 meters thick and were built using a construction technique widely used in antiquity to improve stability.
Anthropologists are currently studying the remains of seven individuals found at the site, and future analyses are expected to provide additional information about the cemetery and those buried there. The discovery is considered exceptionally significant, as it represents the earliest known Christian place of worship in ancient Oderzo.
