Mexico has begun filing complaints and sending cease-and-desist letters to US authorities and private companies over the deaths of 17 Mexican immigrants in US custody. The immigrants, who were all illegal immigrants, died in various incidents, including shootings and medical complications, while being held by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Mexican government has condemned the deaths and is seeking accountability.
Incidents Leading to Deaths
The 17 deaths occurred between May 2025 and March 2026, with 14 of the immigrants dying in ICE custody and three during immigration enforcement operations. The cases include that of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old construction worker who was fatally shot by an ICE officer during an operation in Houston.
Other cases include Abelardo Avellaneda Delgado, 68, who died from a medical complication while being transferred between facilities, and Jesús Molina Veya, 45, who was found unconscious in his cell with a ligature around his neck. The US Department of Homeland Security has denied any wrongdoing and stated that detained individuals receive proper care and due process.
