U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been ordered to temporarily stop most vehicle stops nationwide, according to multiple media reports. The new instruction comes after two recent deadly shootings by ICE officers in Texas and Maine.
Background
In one of the incidents, an illegal immigrant was shot and killed by an ICE officer in Biddeford, Maine. The officer reportedly feared for his safety when the individual drove towards him in a white Kia. The FBI is now in charge of the investigation, with the Maine Attorney General’s office also conducting its own investigation.
The pause on vehicle stops is temporary, and they will resume after federal immigration officials receive new training, reports say. ICE agents will still reportedly use vehicle stops in cases involving dangerous suspects.
