President Donald Trump announced that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was drained on Monday to make repairs, claiming that vandals had gashed the pool’s lining. The more than $14 million renovation project has been plagued by issues, including massive algae blooms and a chipping bottom.
Renovation Issues
The president stated on Truth Social that the pool was drained to fix the damage caused by vandals, which he claimed was 300 yards long. However, his previous claims have varied in length, and a CNN crew did not notice any obvious signs of long gashes in the recently installed lining.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said that the government could prove the damage was caused by vandals, but did not provide further details. The pool’s renovation has been marred by controversy, with at least three people charged with destruction of property for allegedly removing pieces of blue paint from the pool.
