A domestic violence call in the Sun Acres neighborhood of Auburndale, Florida, turned into a deputy-involved shooting when a suspect used a large commercial truck to strike a responding law enforcement vehicle head-on.
Incident Details
According to officials, a Polk County Sheriff’s Sergeant was responding to the domestic violence situation in emergency mode when the suspect attempted to flee in the truck. The suspect drove the vehicle directly into the Sergeant’s vehicle, prompting the Sergeant to fire his weapon through the windshield to stop the threat.
The suspect was grazed on the ear and abandoned the truck, fleeing into the surrounding neighborhood on foot. A perimeter was established, and tracking units located the suspect a few blocks away.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd stated that the Sergeant was responding to a domestic violence situation and the suspect rammed the deputy’s vehicle head-on, leading to the Sergeant firing his weapon to protect himself and stop the threat.
Investigation and Charges
The 10th Judicial Circuit Officer Involved Deadly Incident Task Force has taken over the primary investigation into the shooting. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and is expected to be treated and released into police custody, facing multiple criminal charges.
