Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan are set to face lawmakers on Tuesday to discuss the federal judiciary’s budget request, which includes a $29 million increase in security funding. The judiciary has requested nearly $921 million for security, citing a 57% jump in security incidents involving judges that the US Marshals Service classified as of “significant concern” in 2025.

Security Concerns

Justice Barrett has been at the center of several security incidents, including a swatting attempt at her home in May and a bomb threat at her sister’s home in South Carolina last year. The Supreme Court has also seen an increase in security measures, with the US Marshals Service taking on the responsibility of protecting the justices’ homes in 2022.

The judiciary’s 2027 budget request is only the latest to ask for additional security funding, with a noticeable increase in security presence when the justices travel. Justice Clarence Thomas has spoken out about the heightened security, saying it is now far more difficult for him to take part in activities outside the courthouse.

Barrett and Kagan will be speaking at two hearings on Tuesday, where they are expected to face questions on security funding, as well as other topics such as prediction markets, leaks, and ethics procedures. Lawmakers may also ask about Barrett’s recent votes on high-profile appeals, including her decision to side with the court’s liberals in concluding that President Trump’s attempt to end automatic birthright citizenship through an executive order was unconstitutional.
