The Michigan Department of Corrections has released autopsy results for Khaira Howard, an inmate who died at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti, Michigan. According to the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner, Howard died from a blood clot that traveled to her lung.
Howard’s death was the first of four inmate deaths at the facility between May 13 and July 2. The Michigan Department of Corrections is conducting an internal investigation and mortality review into Howard’s death, as well as the other three deaths.
The department has launched a transparency and action webpage to provide updates on conditions at the prison and information related to inmate deaths. The webpage is part of the department’s effort to provide more transparency and accountability following the recent inmate deaths.
