A former San Jose State University (SJSU) volleyball player, Brooke Slusser, has spoken out against the school’s administration after allegations of misconduct by head coach Todd Kress surfaced. Slusser claimed she was warned by her parents to never be alone with Kress due to rumors of his alleged past behavior.
Allegations Against Coach Kress
A former Fairfield University player alleged that Kress attacked her in a hotel room in 1998. The allegations were sent to SJSU in a letter in October 2024. Slusser stated that the school never informed her or other players about the allegations.
The former Fairfield player’s letter described the alleged incident, stating that Kress ‘forcibly threw me on the bed’ and ‘pulled his pants down and put his back side in my face.’ The player also alleged that Kress ‘picked me up, and threw me into the bathtub where he held me down and threatened to turn on the shower with me laying there.’
University’s Response
Emails show that SJSU officials acknowledged the receipt of the allegations and apologized for the former player’s experiences. However, Kress remained the head coach, and Slusser is now waging a lawsuit against the university and the California State University system for her alleged experiences under Kress.
Slusser expressed concern over the university’s suspension of former assistant coach Melissa Batie-Smoose, who was let go after submitting a Title IX complaint. Slusser stated that she is ‘bothered’ by the university’s decision to keep Kress on payroll while suspending Batie-Smoose.
