Apple Sues OpenAI for Stealing Trade Secrets

Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of stealing trade secrets to build its own hardware for ChatGPT. The lawsuit claims that OpenAI encouraged Apple employees to share confidential information, including details about Apple’s hardware designs.

Background

The lawsuit is the latest development in a partnership between Apple and OpenAI that has turned into a rivalry. The two companies had partnered in 2024 to use ChatGPT as an AI-powered answer engine on the iPhone. However, OpenAI has since recruited former Apple employees, including a former designer who is now overseeing a project to build an AI-powered device that could challenge Apple’s products.

The lawsuit alleges that two former Apple employees, Tang Tan and Chang Liu, accessed and downloaded confidential Apple files while working at OpenAI. Tan, who is now OpenAI’s chief hardware officer, allegedly directed job candidates who were still working at Apple to bring Apple parts to their interviews at OpenAI.

Implications

The lawsuit has significant implications for the tech industry, particularly in the area of artificial intelligence. OpenAI’s development of its own hardware for ChatGPT could potentially challenge Apple’s dominance in the market. The lawsuit also highlights the importance of protecting trade secrets and the potential consequences of stealing confidential information.
