Rescue workers in Venezuela are racing against time to save a 9-year-old boy, Fabio, who they believe may still be alive under the rubble of his family’s apartment building 16 days after a devastating earthquake struck the country.
Earthquake Aftermath
The 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude quakes, which occurred on June 24, destroyed hundreds of buildings, killed over 4,100 people, and left many more missing. Despite the passage of time, rescuers have not given up hope of finding survivors, including Fabio.
Fabio’s father, Francisco Bastardo, has been at the site since the disaster, calling out to his son and hearing what he believes are responses. The Mexican urban search-and-rescue team, Topos Aztecas, has been working to reach Fabio, using specialized equipment to detect signs of life.
While the situation is dire, the rescuers remain determined to save Fabio, with the Topos Aztecas commander, Miguel García, stating that they have been interacting with the boy and are confident that he is still alive.
