The Evil Dead franchise is one of the favorites in the horror genre, and probably the only one without a bad entry. The sixth entry in this long-running franchise might be its most intense. The film, titled Evil Dead Burn, is directed by French filmmaker Sébastian Vaniček.
Plot
Joseph Price (Hunter Doohan) is working on a book based around his grandfather’s studies of the Necronomicon, or Book of the Dead. During this work, he finds where his grandfather hid the Kandarian dagger, the only weapon that can kill any Deadites created by reciting the words in the Book.
Unfortunately, exposing the dagger calls forth any existing Deadites so that they may destroy it. Joseph’s brother William (George Pullar) is the first of their family to be killed by a Deadite, who passes the possession onto him. William’s corpse then passes the possession to his father, Edgar (Erroll Shand), at the funeral home.
Review
If you thought Evil Dead Rise was intense, you aren’t prepared for when Evil Dead Burn says, “Hold my beer.” This is the most sinister and nasty entry in the franchise. The brutality it unleashes on its characters places it among the best nihilistic horror films ever made.
Vaniček not only shows his skill with gruesome set pieces and unsettling atmosphere, he also knows how to capture some amazing imagery. Working with cinematographer Philip Lozano, Evil Dead Burn is full of spectacular camera work.
