A new adaptation of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ is set to premiere on Netflix, following the Ingalls family as they settle in the American frontier in the late 1800s. The show is based on a series of semi-autobiographical books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder about her own family’s pioneer life.
The Show’s Themes
The show’s creator, Rebecca Sonnenshine, says that the series explores the same frontier spirit that defines the American dream today. The show follows the Ingalls family, led by Charles and Caroline, and their two daughters Mary and Laura, as they navigate the challenges of settling in a new land.
Sonnenshine notes that the show is not just about the Ingalls family, but also about the people they meet and interact with, including an Osage family who are adjusting to their own new way of life as settlers claim parts of their land. The show explores themes of community, respect, and understanding between different cultures.
Staying True to the Original
Sonnenshine and her writers made a conscious effort to stay true to the original books and series, incorporating key events and characters from the source material. The show’s star, Luke Bracey, who plays Pa, says that he was able to create his own interpretation of the character without feeling burdened by the original portrayal.
The show’s second season is currently in production, and will introduce a new character, Nellie Oleson, who will be played by Willa Dunn. Sonnenshine says that the show will continue to explore the themes of community, family, and resilience in the face of adversity.
