Jeffersontown city leaders are addressing recent vandalism incidents at local parks, including damage at Skyview Park and Veterans Memorial Park. The vandalism has been particularly severe at Veterans Memorial Park, a park that holds significant importance for the community, especially for veterans.
Response to Vandalism
In response to the vandalism, the city plans to take several measures. The bathrooms at Veterans Memorial Park will be closed and replaced with portable toilets. At Skyview Park, the city will shut off electricity and remove picnic tables. Additionally, the city will be stepping up enforcement of park closing hours and creating stricter pavilion rental contracts that include deposits. The city is also considering grant funding to hire a park ranger to help monitor the parks and prevent future incidents of vandalism.
Mayor Carol Pike emphasized the need for these changes, citing the significant strain that cleanup and repairs have put on city resources. "The amount of overtime that we’re paying for people to stay and clean up is astronomical," she said. "We cannot continually pour money into our facilities and have them be destroyed within a day."
