The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning to South Florida residents about an increase in robberies through dating applications. According to the FBI, dating scams have been around for years, but the recent trend is particularly dangerous because violence is involved.
Dating App Safety Tips
The FBI advises users on dating apps to protect themselves by not sharing their net worth, only meeting in a safe location, and being aware of their surroundings. Additionally, users should not share personally identifiable information and be careful of unverified dating app profiles.
Dating apps like Bumble, Facebook Dating, Hinge, and Tinder offer similar safety information to their users, including not sharing personal contact information, not posting photos of children, and not sending money. Users are also advised to tell a trusted person about their date plans, meet the person at a public location on the first date, and make sure their mobile phone is charged.
As Assistant Special Agent in Charge, FBI Miami, Adam Berry, stated, ‘A criminal posing as a legitimate dating interest can take advantage of a potential victim who is looking for a romantic relationship. We urge people using dating apps to protect themselves. Ensure you are taking precautions to prevent yourself from falling into a dangerous situation.’
