Thousand Oaks Man Arrested After Threatening Parents

A Thousand Oaks man was arrested July 5 after he allegedly threatened to kill his elderly parents, held them inside their bedroom and sparked a standoff that ended when a sheriff’s SWAT team entered the home.

Incident Details

The incident began around 1:30 p.m. Sunday after Ventura County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report that a man was threatening his parents with a knife. The parents told authorities that their adult son, Aaron Lieberman, threatened to kill them and prevented them from leaving their bedroom and they feared he would kill them if they tried to escape.

During the incident, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Communications Center stayed on the phone with one of the parents, who was providing deputies with real-time updates. At one point, one of the victims told dispatchers that Lieberman had started to light an article of clothing on fire, the sheriff’s office reported. Fearing the victims were in immediate danger, SWAT officers forced their way into the home, the sheriff’s office said.

Inside an upstairs bedroom, authorities said Lieberman grabbed the rifle of one of the SWAT officers. During the struggle that followed, he was stunned with a Taser and taken into custody. Authorities arrested Lieberman on suspicion of making criminal threats, false imprisonment, arson of personal property, elder abuse, resisting an executive officer and attempting to take a firearm from a peace officer.

Prior Incidents

The incident is not Lieberman’s first run-in with the law. Ventura County Superior Court records show a complicated history with two convictions, one for resisting an officer and another for drug-related charges.
