Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis announced a new state initiative to connect nursing homes and assisted living communities directly with local churches through Hope Florida’s CarePortal platform.
Supporting Seniors
The program provides a digital pathway for long-term care facilities to post specific volunteer opportunities, making it easier for nearby congregations to step in and serve local seniors.
First Lady Casey DeSantis said, “Every senior deserves to know they matter and are loved… Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply our presence—taking the time to listen, to remind someone that they matter.”
The initiative aims to address a quiet reality in senior care: while many residents receive frequent visits from family, others have fewer connections due to distance, busy schedules, or outliving their loved ones.
Through the CarePortal, participating facilities can request simple acts of service from local churches, such as reading books, playing cards, delivering flowers, celebrating birthdays, or just stopping by for a conversation.
Expansion Plans
The program is rolling out in three initial regions—Leon County, Hillsborough County, and Miami-Dade County—with plans for a full statewide expansion.
State officials hope to tap into Florida’s extensive faith network, which includes an estimated 20,000 churches and faith institutions representing roughly 16.5 million people.
