Across Idaho, numerous businesses have withstood the test of time, adapting to changing circumstances while preserving their unique charm. These establishments have become integral to the state’s history and identity.
Historic Businesses in Idaho
Some of these businesses have been family-owned for over 150 years, while others have become legendary stops that every Idahoan should visit at least once. They have managed to evolve with the times without losing the essence that made them special in the first place.
Unfortunately, not every historic business has been able to celebrate another anniversary. Hannifin’s Cigar Store in downtown Boise closed its doors in 2019 after more than 111 years in business. Another Boise icon, Alexander Davis, closed in 2022 after serving customers for 131 years. The Idaho Blueprint & Supply Company also shut down in 2022 after 113 years in downtown Boise.
These businesses are more than just old buildings; they are pieces of Idaho’s history. By choosing to shop local, eat at family-owned restaurants, or visit historic stores, we help preserve a part of what makes Idaho unique.
