A parasitic infection causing ‘explosive’ diarrhea has made its way to Kentucky, with 10 cases diagnosed in the past two weeks, according to Norton Healthcare. The infection, known as cyclosporiasis, is a parasitic infection that causes severe diarrhea and other gastrointestinal issues.
What is Cyclosporiasis?
Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection that is primarily found in soil, fruits, and vegetables. It peaks during the summertime when people are eating more fruits and vegetables. The parasite adheres to the gut, matures, and then causes intense watery diarrhea. Most people resolve it on their own, but some can get awfully sick and need antibiotics to clear it.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend several ways to prevent getting the infection, including washing hands before and after handling or preparing raw fruits and vegetables, washing all fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating, cutting, or cooking, and refrigerating cut, peeled, or cooked fruits and vegetables within two hours or as soon as possible.
Symptoms and Treatment
Those who become infected can be sick for anywhere from two days to two weeks or more. Symptoms include explosive diarrhea, fever, and nausea. If you are experiencing symptoms, contact your healthcare provider. Treatment typically involves rest and hydration, but some individuals may need antibiotics to clear the infection.
