A senior Swiss trade official, Helene Budliger Artieda, has expressed optimism that Switzerland can maintain its current 15% US tariff rate. This rate was established as part of a preliminary deal with Washington in November.
According to Artieda, Swiss firms are eager to establish predictable trading terms with the United States. The current tariff rate is set to expire on July 24, and Switzerland is still negotiating with the US to finalize a trade deal.
The Trump administration had previously imposed the highest US tariffs in Europe on Switzerland, but the two countries reached a deal to lower them to the same rate levied on the European Union. Artieda noted that energy costs are an area where Switzerland needs to become more affordable to support the country’s economic growth.
