Armed suspect at large after homicide in Cibola County
CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. — Authorities in Cibola County are actively investigating a recent homicide that occurred near the Candy Kitchen and Pinehill areas and are warning residents to exercise caution. Officials have released only limited details as the investigation remains ongoing.
Deputies report that one person, identified as Tonia Byington, has been taken into custody in connection with the case. Law enforcement emphasized that the investigation is continuing and that more information will be shared when it is confirmed and appropriate to release.
At the same time, deputies say another individual, David Thomas Byington, is wanted on an open count of murder and is considered armed and dangerous. Officers have issued a warning to the public not to approach him if seen and to instead contact law enforcement immediately.
Investigators believe David Byington may be traveling in an older-model gray Ford Ranger. Residents in the area are being asked to be alert for that vehicle and to report any sightings or tips to the sheriff’s office rather than attempting to intervene.
Officials are urging anyone with information about the homicide or the whereabouts of the suspect to call the Cibola County Sheriff’s Office. Tips can assist deputies as they work to locate the individual and ensure public safety.
As the investigation continues, deputies say they will provide updates when verified information becomes available. In the meantime, community members are advised to remain vigilant, keep a safe distance from anyone matching the suspect’s description, and report suspicious activity to authorities.
