Wake County Schools began their new school year on July 7, with around 40,000 students in tracks one, two, and three. This year, the school district is introducing a new Standard Response Protocol to enhance safety during emergency situations.
New Safety Protocols
The five-step protocol includes Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. Each step has specific actions for students and staff to follow in case of an emergency. For example, during a Lockdown, students should move away from sight, remain silent, and not open any doors, while staff will turn off lights, lock doors, and maintain silence.
The new protocol is designed to provide a more comprehensive response toolkit to keep schools a safe learning environment. Wake County Schools emphasized the importance of evolving their approach to handling emergency situations.
