An Edmond mom, Katie Smith, has joined a national movement called ‘Pencils Over Pixels’ to push schools to bring pen and paper back to classrooms. Smith’s concern about excessive screen time in schools began when her third-grader’s biggest takeaway from the school day was the fun he had playing on a Chromebook rather than what he was learning.
Concerns Over Screen Time
Smith pointed to research that links excessive screen time to a negative impact on learning and social development for children. She started a local chapter of Pencils Over Pixels to push districts to limit screen time. Edmond Public Schools said it doesn’t have a district-wide policy setting limits on instructional Chromebook use.
Smith drafted a resolution asking the school board to make pen-and-paper instruction the primary classroom method while reserving technology for lessons where it provides clear educational benefit. She hopes this small action of change can create a larger impact on her and other students’ futures.
