The Oneida Nation is using state grant money to contribute to two Green Bay projects. The tribe is donating $300,000 to the Urban Barn project, a $1.6 million initiative that will provide food processing equipment and storage for small to midsize farmers.
Supporting Local Farmers
The Urban Barn project aims to open new revenue streams for farmers and extend the growing season. Oneida Nation Chairman Tehassi Hill stated, “I think food production facilities are always needed in the Oneida community, but the larger community as well.”
The Oneida Nation is also donating $100,000 to the Bay Beach shoreline project, which recently faced a setback due to high construction bids. Green Bay Parks Director Dan Ditscheit said, “We were not able to award that bid… so what we’re doing right now is we’re evaluating our options and putting together a gameplan for where we go from here.”
Community Partnerships
The donations are part of the tribe’s efforts to support the local community. The Oneida Nation has a 10-year cooperative agreement with the City of Green Bay, which has led to various partnerships and collaborations. Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich said, “We tremendously value the partnership that we have from the City of Green Bay with the Oneida Nation…”
