Russia and China started joint naval drills on July 6, with the exercises set to run until July 13. The drills are taking place in the waters and airspace off the Chinese city of Qingdao.
Regional Security
The Kremlin stated that the exercises are not directed against any other country and will boost regional security. Russia has sent a cruiser, a corvette, a diesel-electric submarine, and a rescue vessel from its Pacific Fleet to participate in the drills.
Russia’s Rear Admiral Sergei Sinko said at the drill’s opening ceremony that the exercises would take naval cooperation between Moscow and Beijing to a new level, stressing that the exercises are defensive in nature.
