Purdue wide receiver and Apopka native Asaad Waseem has filed a countersuit against Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) contract dispute. Waseem, who transferred to Purdue from FAU, is being sued by FAU for $30,000 in unpaid NIL money.
Contract Dispute
FAU claims that Waseem owes them the money because he violated a contract he signed with them in September 2025. However, Waseem argues that the liquidation charges are unenforceable under Florida law and that the amount is disproportionate to the harm he may have caused the team.
Waseem also claims that the penalty is not due to damages but because he transferred to another school. He alleges that the provision functions primarily as a transfer-deterrence mechanism designed to induce continued enrollment and athletic participation rather than compensate FAU for identifiable NIL losses.
If the allegation that FAU is using the lawsuit to punish Waseem for transferring is true, it may violate the NCAA NIL policies that allow athlete mobility between teams within college sports. Waseem has asked for declaratory relief in his case.
