Eugene’s legendary Hayward Field once again lived up to its reputation as the home of track and field excellence, hosting the 2026 Prefontaine Classic as part of the prestigious Diamond League series this Fourth of July weekend.
The meet delivered a string of thrilling performances across multiple events. American sprinter Jefferson-Wooden claimed victory in the men’s 100 metres, holding off a loaded field in a photo-finish decision. On the women’s side, 18-year-old American Taylor turned heads by winning the 200 metres, dusting a competitive field in impressive fashion.
The distance events were equally memorable. Australian star Cameron Myers capped what was described as a terrific week by winning the Bowerman Mile, while Nikki Hiltz — a native of Aptos, California — earned a record-setting victory in the women’s mile, adding another highlight to an already electric evening at Hayward Field.
The Prefontaine Classic, named in honor of University of Oregon running legend Steve Prefontaine, has long drawn the world’s top athletes to Eugene, and the 2026 edition was no exception. The Register-Guard captured the atmosphere in a photo gallery from the event, reflecting the excitement felt throughout the community.
For Eugene, hosting a Diamond League meet on Independence Day weekend is a point of civic pride — a reminder that Track Town USA continues to stand at the center of the global athletics stage.
