A recent survey by WalletHub ranked all 50 states based on their level of patriotism. Virginia was ranked as the most patriotic state overall, with a high number of active-duty military personnel and veterans. Montana was ranked second, with a high voter turnout rate and a large number of Americorps volunteers.
Methodology
The survey used a methodology that incorporated more than a dozen indicators, including military engagement, civic engagement, and volunteerism. Virginia ranked third in terms of military engagement, with nearly 1,761 active-duty military personnel per 100,000 civilians. The state also had a high voter turnout rate, with 72.9% of residents voting in the 2024 presidential election.
Montana was rated the second-most patriotic state, in part due to its high voter turnout rate. Nearly 69.2% of the state’s voting population turned out for the 2024 presidential election, and almost 46% voted in the 2020 primary election. The state also ranked second in jury service and had a high number of Americorps volunteers.
Top and Bottom States
The top five most patriotic states were Virginia, Montana, Vermont, Colorado, and Oregon. The least patriotic states were Arkansas, New York, Louisiana, and Alabama. The survey found that the 19 ‘blue’ states that voted for Kamala Harris in 2024 were on average more patriotic than the 31 states that voted for President Donald Trump.
