The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has upgraded a recall of hundreds of thousands of bags of Zapp’s and Dirty potato chip brands, which includes several flavors, to the highest warning level. Utz Quality Foods had issued a voluntary recall in May because a seasoning ingredient that includes a dry milk powder could contain salmonella.
Reason for Recall
The new USDA Class One recall means that there’s a reasonable chance that eating the chips could cause serious injury or death, according to investigators. Utz says no illnesses have been reported. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The recalled chips were sold nationwide. No other products produced by Utz Quality Foods are included in this recall. If you have these chips, you should throw them away or contact Utz for a refund.
