A parasitic infection known as cyclosporiasis has been reported in multiple US states, including Michigan, causing severe, watery diarrhea in dozens of people. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working to identify the source of the outbreak, which is commonly linked to fresh produce.
Outbreak Details
At least 20 people have been hospitalized nationwide, and over 170 cases have been reported in southeast Michigan since June 22, 2026. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is investigating the sudden increase in cases, which is higher than the state’s typical annual total of 50 cases.
The CDC reports that cases of cyclosporiasis have been on the rise in multiple states since May, with at least 145 cases reported in 17 US states between May 1 and June 16. New York has reported the highest number of cases, followed by Illinois and Texas.
Symptoms and Prevention
The main symptom of cyclosporiasis is severe, watery diarrhea, which can be accompanied by appetite loss, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and a low-grade fever. The infection can last for several days to over a month and may cause relapses of symptoms.
To prevent infection, the CDC recommends avoiding consuming food or water that may be contaminated with feces and following proper hand hygiene and safe food handling practices.
