A US House Judiciary Committee report accuses South Korean authorities of consistently discriminating against US-based Coupang, a campaign that escalated with numerous investigations after a data breach at the e-commerce firm last year.
Report Alleges Government Assault on Coupang
The report claims that South Korea’s actions were part of long-standing economic discrimination against US and other foreign companies, directly violating a recent bilateral trade agreement.
South Korean foreign ministry spokesperson Park Il disputed the report, calling it one-sided and reflecting only claims by Coupang. Allegations of discrimination against Coupang and other US companies were untrue, he added.
After a data breach at Coupang, South Korea initiated dozens of unrelated investigations, issuing over 4,000 document requests and conducting at least 652 interviews with Coupang employees.
