Hot days can sometimes lead to pavement heaving, or what the city calls a blow-up, where the roads expand and push. This is what happened this week in West Des Moines, specifically on 4000 EP True Parkway.
Ron Wiese, Operations Manager for Street Maintenance, City of West Des Moines, explained that weaker spots are at joints and curbs, and it can happen anywhere with heat, on any kind of road.
Crews will be working on making repairs on 4000 EP True Parkway on Monday morning, with head-to-head traffic on one side, allowing drivers to keep going through, while the eastbound lanes will be closed.
Wiese said these incidents are not a big threat to public safety, but it’s possible this could happen more times with the continuing heat. Scattered debris and misplaced chunks are signs drivers should look out for, and if drivers see anything, the city of West Des Moines requests that they give them a call at 515-222-3321.
