A Mississippi family is seeking answers after their 1-year-old child, Kohen Wiley, was killed by police in a shooting that has sparked outrage in the small town of Senatobia. According to the family’s attorney, Ben Crump, a second autopsy revealed that the baby was shot from the side of the car, contradicting the officers’ initial account that they were in danger.
Investigation and Protests
The shooting occurred on June 14 when police were called to a Walmart parking lot about diapers that may have been shoplifted. The baby’s mother, who is Black, claims that her friend was driving away from the officers, while the officers initially said the car was heading toward them. The woman was critically wounded in the incident.
The family is demanding that police body camera and dashcam video, as well as Walmart surveillance video, be made public. Crump spoke from the pulpit of Senatobia Church of Christ, surrounded by the baby’s grandparents and other supporters, saying, “We are here because of the lack of transparency, and we’re going to try to continue to demand transparency.” The community has been protesting the shooting, with many pointing to a string of troubling encounters with police in recent years.
