The Trump administration has filed two separate lawsuits against California and Virginia, challenging new laws in both states that restrict the sale of semi-automatic rifles. The Justice Department claims these laws violate the Second Amendment.
Virginia Law
Virginia’s Democratic governor, Abigail Spanberger, signed legislation earlier this year banning the sale and manufacture of certain semi-automatic firearms. The law, which took effect recently, is facing at least four other lawsuits challenging its constitutionality.
The California law, on the other hand, prohibits gun shops from selling certain handguns that can easily be made fully automatic. Attorneys general in both states have vowed to defend their gun laws.
Constitutional Questions
The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear another major Second Amendment case, considering whether bans on semi-automatic rifles violate the Constitution. The court, which has a conservative majority, has expanded gun rights in recent years.
