A Christian nation is not one that imposes its values on others, but one that upholds virtue and the common good. As Christians, our citizenship calls us to keep the republic by implementing the values we espouse as Christians and Americans.
Keeping the Republic
This means recognizing that we are first citizens of God’s realm and seeking to cultivate virtue, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We must also engage in democracy, whether through a political party or as an independent, and participate in the common good.
As the late Congressman John Lewis reminded us, “When you pray, move your feet.” Lincoln called us to “the better angels of our nature” as a people and a nation. The American republic is 250 years old, and it is still an experiment “if you can keep it.” As Christians and as American citizens, let’s be in the laboratory of virtue and the common good.
