A pre-primary forum for Johnson County Commission Chair candidates drew an overflow crowd to discuss affordable housing, election management, and property taxes.
Candidates’ Views
Incumbent Mike Kelly, Karen Crnkovich, and Gene Senesac are running in the Aug. 4 primary. The top two vote getters will face each other in the November general election.
A decision by Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt to close eight early in-person voting sites in densely populated areas sparked protest. Kelly expressed concerns, while Crnkovich supported the reduction in locations.
Senesac suggested investigating potential election irregularities, but provided no evidence. Kelly cited a recent recount in Prairie Village as proof of fair elections.
The candidates also discussed World Cup spending and property taxes. Crnkovich said decisions should be based on return on investment, while Kelly highlighted the benefits of tourism.
