King Charles III has decided not to move into Buckingham Palace after a £369 million renovation. The palace will continue to serve as the administrative headquarters of the monarchy.
History of the Palace
Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence of the sovereign since 1837. Queen Victoria was the first monarch to live in the palace, moving in when she came to the throne nearly 200 years ago.
Despite its rich history, the palace has undergone extensive remodeling over the years. The latest conservation work began in 2017 and includes the replacement of aging electrical, plumbing, and mechanical services, as well as the removal of asbestos.
Royal Residences
While King Charles III will not be moving into Buckingham Palace, he will maintain private rooms there that could be used as accommodation. The King will remain at nearby Clarence House, where he has lived since 2003.
Other members of the royal family have also preferred to live in other residences. Queen Victoria spent most of her time at Windsor Castle after the death of her husband, Prince Albert, in 1861. Queen Elizabeth II also preferred to live at Windsor Castle, citing the building work at Buckingham Palace during the Covid-19 pandemic.
