Wyoming, one of the most sparsely populated states in the US, has a unique community – the nudist club, Wyotans. This group, affiliated with the American Association of Nude Recreation and the Northwest Nudist Association, has its official headquarters in Gillette.
Who are Wyotans?
Wyotans has members from Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Montana, and the Dakotas. The club holds monthly meetings in members’ homes and conducts several retreats each year. Past events have been held in Casper, the Big Horn Mountains, and various campgrounds across the state and region.
According to a website devoted to nudist resorts, approximately 40 members are part of the Wyotans club. They include singles, couples, and families, and range in age up to 85 years old.
Nudity Laws in Wyoming
Wyoming generally prohibits appearing in a state of nudity in public places under state and local public indecency laws. However, following a federal appeals court ruling covering Wyoming, women have the legal right to be topless in public spaces, equal to men.
Despite the presence of Wyotans, there are no recognized commercial nudist resorts located within Wyoming. While the state offers secluded hot springs and remote public lands where people occasionally practice social nudity or skinny-dipping, established clothing-optional resorts do not operate here.
