A new super PAC, American Priorities, has emerged as a significant force in House Democratic primaries, spending at least $5.6 million to support Democrats who are fiercely critical of Israel and its war in Gaza.
Countering AIPAC’s Influence
The group was formed to counter the influence of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its super PAC, the United Democracy Project. AIPAC’s super PAC has spent at least $34 million this election cycle, but American Priorities has still managed to make an impact in several key races.
In the recent New York primaries, American Priorities helped two democratic socialists, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez, pull off wins. The group also spent $150,000 on TV ads to support Melat Kiros in the Colorado primaries, helping her defeat Rep. Diana DeGette.
A New Force in Democratic Primaries
American Priorities has spent in eight primaries, including for democratic socialist Chris Rabb in Philadelphia and Durham County Commissioner Nida Allam in North Carolina. While the group’s spending is still dwarfed by AIPAC’s super PAC, its willingness to spend upwards of $1 million in individual races has given it a significant presence in Democratic primaries.
The group’s top donors, Omer Hassan and Mohammad Waqas Javed, have each contributed $1 million to the cause. Hassan and Javed were also top donors to a super PAC that supported New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s 2025 mayoral campaign.
American Priorities’ spending has been focused on supporting Democrats who are critical of Israel and its war in Gaza. The group has run ads highlighting the candidates’ support for Palestinian human rights and their willingness to stand up to AIPAC’s influence in Democratic primaries.
