A new flood pump station in Shively, near Louisville, is nearing completion. The $230 million facility will replace the original Paddy’s Run Flood Pump Station, which has been in use since 1953.
Upgrades and Improvements
The new 12,000 sq. ft. Paddy’s Run Flood Pump Station will be better equipped to handle large flooding events. It features double the horsepower of the existing facility, with the ability to move 1.9 billion gallons of water a day. All eight pumps have the capability to drain an entire Olympic swimming pool in less than 30 seconds.
MSD executive director Tony Parrott said, ‘It is an asset that we know will protect this city, particularly the west end of Louisville and Shively, for the next 50 years.’ The existing facility is so old that parts inside could no longer be replaced.
Construction and Funding
Construction on the new pumping station is expected to be complete next year. The old facility will remain in operation for one year to allow for testing on the new facility. $123 million in grants, principal forgiveness loans, or low-interest loans helped pay for the project.
