NPR Retracts Justice Alito Retirement Report

National Public Radio (NPR) has retracted an article that incorrectly reported the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. The article, written by veteran Supreme Court reporter Nina Totenberg, was posted on the final day of the Supreme Court’s session.

Retraction and Apology

NPR quickly retracted the article, citing a misunderstanding. An editor’s note was posted, stating that neither Justice Alito nor the court’s public information office had announced his retirement. NPR’s Editor-in-Chief, Tommy Evans, released a statement regretting the error and any confusion it may have caused.

Totenberg planned to address the issue on air later in the day, and had reached out to Alito to apologize. The Supreme Court’s public information office had denied the report earlier in the day, after Chief Justice John Roberts announced the retirement of several court employees, but not Justice Alito.

Speculation had swirled about Justice Alito’s future plans earlier this year, but Fox News and CBS reported this spring that he planned to remain on the bench. Justice Alito has been on the court since 2006, when he replaced Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and was nominated by President George W. Bush, a Republican.
