Sun, Sand, and the Sweetest Catch: Why Leatherman’s Reef Should Be on Every Treasure Coast Bucket List

There are beaches, and then there are beaches that make you stop mid-stride, pull off your sunglasses, and simply stare. Bathtub Reef Beach, tucked at the southern tip of Hutchinson Island just a short drive from Port St. Lucie, is absolutely the latter. The moment I stepped onto that powdery sand and saw the shallow, calm lagoon stretching out before me — protected on the ocean side by a natural coquina reef — I understood immediately why locals treat this place like a well-guarded secret they can barely resist telling everyone about.

The beach gets its name from the way the reef acts as a natural barrier, creating a protected wading area that is as calm and warm as — you guessed it — a bathtub. That makes it an absolute dream for families with small children, snorkelers, and anyone who wants to experience the ocean without battling unpredictable surf. On the day I visited, kids were squealing with delight in knee-deep water while their parents lounged on beach chairs just a few feet away, close enough to keep an eye on things but relaxed enough to actually exhale. That balance is surprisingly hard to find.

But do not let the gentle lagoon fool you into thinking this is just a kiddie beach. Wade out toward the reef itself, strap on a snorkel mask, and an entirely different world opens up beneath you. The coquina rock formations are alive with juvenile fish, sea urchins, small crabs, and the occasional spotted eagle ray gliding past in the clearer water beyond. Visibility is often excellent in the morning hours before the afternoon breeze kicks up, and the reef sits close enough to shore that even beginner snorkelers feel completely comfortable exploring it.

The surrounding area adds to the charm considerably. Bathtub Reef Beach sits within Martin County’s MacArthur Beach State Park ecosystem, so the stretch of coastline here is beautifully undeveloped. Sea grape trees and dune vegetation line the beach, and a short nature boardwalk winds through coastal hammock, offering a shaded stroll with interpretive signage about local wildlife. It feels like a place that has been genuinely cared for over time, not just maintained.

Parking is available at the beach access point on SE MacArthur Boulevard in Stuart, and the drive from central Port St. Lucie takes roughly 25 to 30 minutes — an easy half-day escape or the perfect anchor for a full beach day. Arrive early on weekends, as the lot fills up fast once word gets out about how good the snorkeling is. There are restroom facilities and outdoor showers on site, which makes cleanup effortless before the drive home.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for navigating the rocky reef edge, and a reusable water bottle. Pack a cooler, settle into the sand, and let Bathtub Reef Beach remind you exactly why the Treasure Coast earned its name. This is one of those places you visit once and immediately start planning your return trip before you have even dried off.
