The Round Rock City Council has approved a measure granting an extension to the agreement with Meadows at Chandler Creek Municipal Utility District (MUD) to renegotiate infrastructure responsibility. The city and MUD now have until December 31, 2026, to come to a new agreement.
Background
The original 40-year-old agreement was set to expire on June 26. Under the 1986 agreement, the city of Round Rock has been responsible for all water and wastewater line maintenance and repairs, as well as meter reading and utility billing, within the MUD.
According to Public Works Director Michael Thane, much of this infrastructure is nearing the end of its useful life, presenting a large cost to the city. The replacement of these lines would cost around $100 million, with a 60-40 split between water and wastewater lines.
Next Steps
With the approval, a future contract will be brought back to the Council after an agreement is reached. Thane noted that it may be a hybrid of what the city has for existing wholesale customers with MUDs, and that the city needs to protect its ratepayers as it moves forward with this agreement.
