Eli Sabin, a Democrat running for a west-side state House of Representatives seat, has released a policy platform focused on affordability. Sabin proposes making it easier for families to buy multifamily homes and convert them into condos, which he believes will help lower the cost of living.
Condo Conversions and ‘Just Cause’ Protections
Sabin’s plan includes creating simple templates and standards for families to use to turn multifamily rentals into condos and apply for mortgages. He also suggests that the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority offer down-payment assistance and mortgages to assist first-time homebuyers in purchasing these condos.
In addition to condo conversions, Sabin is advocating for ‘just cause’ eviction protections, which would prevent landlords from evicting tenants without a legitimate reason. He believes that this will help prevent displacement and support the long-term well-being of communities.
Education Funding and Taxation
Sabin’s policy platform also includes a call for increased state funding for education. He believes that the state needs to significantly increase funding to municipalities for public education and has proposed increasing the Education Cost Sharing foundation grant to $16,000 per student. Sabin also supports raising taxes on the wealthiest individuals in the state to help cover the costs of increased education funding.
