The Pittsburgh Pirates pulled off one of the biggest comebacks of the season Monday night, erasing a five-run deficit to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-7 at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies came out swinging early, with Trea Turner and Brandon Marsh homering in the first inning, and Bryce Harper having Philadelphia up five-nothing through three.
However, the Pirates answered in a big way. Esmerlyn Valdez went deep, and the Bucs put up a six-run fifth inning against Aaron Nola, who took the loss and fell to three and five on the year after allowing eight runs in four and a third innings.
Pittsburgh starter Braxton Ashcraft gutted through six innings to earn the win, improving to eight and three on the season.
The Phillies made it interesting in the eighth when Brandon Marsh hit his second home run of the night, but Endy Rodriguez slammed the door with a three-run bomb in the ninth to seal it.
Tonight at Citizens Bank Park, it’s right-hander Bubba Chandler — three and seven with a four-forty-two E-R-A — taking the mound for Pittsburgh against Phillies ace Cristopher Sanchez, who comes in at nine and three with a two-thirteen E-R-A. First pitch set for 6:40pm EDT
