Goals of the Institute
The institute aims to train leaders for the future. Pelosi said she wants to use her experience to help train these leaders. The institute will concentrate on issues such as human rights, democracy, climate change, and economic inequality.
Pelosi was approached by a group of administrators and professors at Berkeley almost a year ago with the idea of the institute. She agreed to raise $25 million before the announcement, which she said she did easily. The university said this is a $50 million campaign.
The institute will not be a physical building but rather a programmatic one. Pelosi plans to bring high-profile people from both parties to visit and lecture at Berkeley. She will also co-teach a class with professor Eric Schickler, a leading scholar on Congress.
