A new poll released by the American Association of Retired People shows that Democrats hold slight leads in Ohio’s Senate and gubernatorial races. Democrat Sherrod Brown maintains a three-point lead over Republican Jon Husted in the race for US Senate, while Democrat Amy Acton is ahead with an identical three points over Republican Vivek Ramaswamy as both campaign for governor.
Key Findings
In the Senate race, the AARP found that Brown currently has the support of 48% of voters, while Husted garners support from 45%. Meanwhile, Acton holds the support of a near-identical 47% of voters, in contrast to Ramaswamy’s 44%.
The findings continue the wider polling trend seen over the past few months that shows an incredibly tight contest in both races. Prior to the release of the AARP’s poll, a similar poll taken by Fox News this month showed both Brown and Acton leading by single-digit margins.
Voter Concerns
Regardless of age, Ohio voters share many of the same core concerns behind what is fueling their vote. The poll showed that both groups rated ‘rising prices and affordability’ as their top issue category. Additionally, each group also expressed significant concern about ‘taxes, government spending and debt’ and ‘threats to democracy.’ However, generational differences emerge in each demographic’s priorities, with older voters prioritizing ‘Social Security and Medicare’ and ‘immigration and border security,’ while younger voters are more concerned about ‘abortion and reproductive issues’ and ‘the environment and climate change.’
