A Republican Party precinct race in Minnehaha County was decided by a game of chance after Timothy Tiahrt and Scott Swanson each received 152 votes in the VP-09 race. The candidates had identical vote totals for day-of-election ballots and absentee ballots.
After the official election canvass, Judge Robin Houwman appointed a committee to recount the ballots. When the recount failed to garner a winner, a tiebreaker was used to decide the race.
