Maverik Won’t Appeal Rezoning Denial for Carlisle-Indian School Gas Station

Opponents of a proposed Maverik service station at the corner of Carlisle Boulevard and Indian School Road in northeast Albuquerque received another setback for the project on Friday. City officials reported that Maverik elected not to pursue an appeal after the municipality refused to change the zoning for the site.

Earlier in April, city authorities declined to grant the Conditional Use Approval that would have allowed a gas station to occupy the former Whole Foods property. That decision effectively blocked Maverik’s plan to convert the vacant building into a fueling and convenience location.

The Whole Foods store moved to a site across the street, leaving the old building largely unused. Neighbors have pushed back against the gas-station proposal, noting there are already multiple fueling stations in close proximity and expressing concerns about traffic, safety and neighborhood character.

Residents and community groups had been active in voicing opposition during the review process, and their feedback contributed to the council’s decision to deny rezoning. With Maverik choosing not to challenge that ruling, the company has allowed the matter to stand as decided by city staff.

Maverik had a deadline of April 16 to file an appeal but did not meet it, so the denial remains in effect and the former grocery site will continue to sit mostly vacant for the time being. Neighbors say they will continue to monitor future proposals for the property.
