Vancouver, British Columbia, has transformed its Science World museum into a gigantic 17-story soccer ball for the World Cup. The idea, which was initially considered a joke, became a reality after local businesses, organizations, and government agencies pitched in to help pay for the project.
The Transformation Process
The normally silver dome has been a fixture of the Vancouver skyline since it was built for the 1986 World’s Fair. To transform it into an enormous soccer ball, a drone was dispatched to take detailed laser measurements of each of the geodesic dome’s many panels. Pliable panels were then manufactured and numbered for their precise locations, installed, and connected with special ties to give slightly in windy conditions.
The museum has seen a rise in visitors during the tournament, and the visual explosion on social media has been immense, with photos of the dome being shared widely.
Science World is also hosting a special exhibit, Soccer and Technology, from the FIFA Museum, which has been tweaked to add a bit of Canadian flavor.
