House Majority Whip Tom Emmer recently addressed a crowd at the Faith and Freedom conference, stating that immigrants who refuse to assimilate into American society should return to their countries of origin.
Assimilation and American Identity
Emmer emphasized the importance of immigrants understanding that they are coming to the United States to be Americans, while still being allowed to celebrate their diverse backgrounds. He noted that a lack of integration into American culture is unacceptable.
Emmer explicitly referenced several heritage groups, including Italian, Polish, and Somali populations, before issuing a direct ultimatum: “Celebrate your culture. I don’t care. Italian, Polish, Somali, okay? But they don’t assimilate. And if they don’t assimilate, then they should go the hell back to where they came from.”
